I don't get it...

The blogosphere is full of Harry Potter madness. It seems that everyone is reading the newest book in the series...and I don't get it. It's not the only thing I don't get. But it's the newest thing. I just can't get that excited about this book. I can't understand hitting the SuperCenter at midnight to get one of the first copies of the book sold. I don't understand how someone could be so enthralled by the book as to spend eleven hours reading it. And I really don't get why someone would spend her vacation, once again, reading the book. But I guess I don't have to get it...because there are a lot of things that I do that others don't get, and I am just fine with that.

My mom is a big fan of Harry Potter. My dad bought her a copy of the new book on Saturday...and she finished it in a few days. It was a race between her and her friend Deb to see who could finish it first. I haven't yet heard who won. When any Harry Potter movie comes on, my mom will watch it. It might be the whole movie or just a spot in the middle or the fifteen minutes at the end. If it's on, and she finds it, she's watching it. And I don't get it.

Some other things that I don't get...sushi (I tried to like it, but I don't), coffee (I wish that I liked it because a caramel machiatto sounds good), crocheting (give me needles instead of hooks anyday), and the Boston Red Sox (Yankee fan here...enough said). But I guess that's what makes this a great place...you are free to love Harry Potter, while I watch the movie Dave for the 27th time on Cinemax. You can eat your sushi, while I opt for tempura. You can drink your coffee, while I drink my Chai. You can crochet while I do the knit-and-purl thing. And you can root for the Boston Red Sox, while...well, even I wouldn't go that far.

I'm a potterphile. but I totally get your not getting it. as far as obsessions go, I'd say harry potter is probably one of the more benign. now watching Dave that often, however....

just kiddin.

I just bought the new Harry Potter book yesterday. I will admit that I love all things Potter. I am thankful, though, that there are many more adults that are into it so I don't have to feel like such a loser! ;)

As far as the sushi thing...I am with you there. I'll take my fish wrapped in some yummy batter and dipped in oil please.

And knitting??? You can teach me. I can crochet, but I find it a little boring.

I enjoy Harry Potter. It's pure escapism.

Well I don't get baseball at all. Or any spectator sport for that matter. I can understand the fun of playing sports but just sitting there watching people seems so... DUMB.

i love harry potter and am excited to read the new one, but i'm able to restrain myself and wait until i'm on the beach in a couple of weeks. i did buy it on saturday though - but only because i saw it at costco for $15!!

i don't understand why people would want to see the starwars (or any movie) at midnight.. and that kind of other weirdo fanatical stuff.

although if ticketmaster didn't exist (and a lot of times i wish it didn't), i would sleep outside to get certain concert tickets..

and i like sushi and coffee, don't knit or crochet, and play softball but hate watching baseball. give me hockey any day =)

I have not read any of the Harry Potter books, so I cannot say whether or not I am a fan. I can say that I do not like coffee or sushi either. Yuck.

**Finishes his triple and quadruple takes at the Star Wars comment**

**Then remembers he thought the same thing of people that went to see the movie at Midnight on opening day...but only because he couldn't go that night**

The thing you have to understand about Star Wars is that it was the ultimate guy movie for little boys growing up. We grew up on three of them...legendary in their time. We didn't see Luke as the whiney brat that we look back at and see him as now.

Plus...there is something about the final movie of six that makes people want to be part of it all. Should there be 7 Harry Potter movies, I would be willing to bet that there are just as many people at the midnight showing for the final one as there were for Star Wars.

Unfortunately I have not been much of a reader most of my life, so I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books...I've watched the three movies and like them a lot...and listened to the first one on tape, and it was ok...but somewhat distracting with a 6-month old crying every 2 hours causing gaps in the story. :)

I am slowly begining to enjoy reading, however. Did you know that it is said that if you read three books on any one subject that you are considered to be an expert on that subject? That's pretty powerful...and probably urged me to begin reading more. Eventually I will someday read the Harry Potter books though...who knows, maybe even in time to catch up in time for the 7th book to be published so I can be waiting in line at midnight. :)

Ah yes...coming full circle. I bet you thought my rant was going stay off topic didn't you? :)

Not understanding Harry Potter or coffee...gotcha. But a Yankees fan? Around these parts, that's right up there with multiple homocide. Three guesses where I'm from... :)

I saw that you didn't like sushi or coffee or Harry Potter, and I paused.

And then I read that you enjoy chai, tempura, and other books, and I rejoiced! God love ya for having options. What I can't stand are people who won't go into sushi restaurants because, "Raw fish is icky," and I beg and plead with them in a vain attempt to convince them that, yes, sushi restaurants SERVE FOOD OTHER THAN SUSHI. Tempura, for example, which is wonderful even for us sushi-eaters. When I worked at a sushi restaurant I used to make kissy faces at the chefs for tempura shrimp hot out of the deep fryer. Ambrosia.

Yeah...I'm on board with you. I'm so not into the Harry Potter thing and have prided myself for never getting overly obsessed with much. Where I might enjoy a particular show or theme, I always try not to go overboard.

P.S. In reference to a previous post: Grove City? Really? Geneva grad here so that's just interesting to see!

You sound like me. I think HP is okay, and read half the first book, but I'm still wondering about Harry mania. And who's on the cover of my issue of Entertainment Weekly? Harry Potter! Sheesh.

And I don't like coffee either. There was a guy in front of store handing out their newest blend, I took it, took a sip and wanted to hurl. Not a coffee drinker.

And I really, really (for some reason) want to like sushi. I actually forced myself to eat it once. (?) I think I'll just have to face reality one day, that I don't like it. Although, I do like the seaweed wraps and the rice wrap thingies. Sorry, I really don't know what any of it is called.
